Programme Overview
Children’s right to participation is enshrined in Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which guarantees that children have the right to express their views freely in all matters affecting them, with their opinions given due weight in accordance with their age and maturity.
Despite this internationally recognized right, child participation is frequently overlooked or tokenistic, especially in vulnerable communities. CKG is committed to transforming this reality by embedding a robust child participation approach into all our programmes and activities. We promote meaningful consultation, genuine involvement, and respectful listening, recognizing children as active agents of change in their own lives.
Why Child Participation is Crucial
- Empowerment: Enabling children to understand their rights and exercise agency builds confidence and self-worth.
- Better Outcomes: Programs and policies that include children’s input are more relevant, effective, and sustainable.
- Protection: Children’s voices help identify risks and abuses that adults may overlook, contributing to safer environments.
- Social Inclusion: Participation fosters a sense of belonging, reduces marginalization, and promotes equality, especially for girls, children with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.
- Democratic Values: Teaching participation instills respect for diversity, human rights, and community responsibility from an early age.
Our Child Participation Approach
1. Consultation – Seeking Children’s Views
- Use age-appropriate, culturally sensitive methods to gather children’s perspectives, such as:
- Participatory workshops
- Storytelling and art expression
- Child-friendly surveys and questionnaires
- Focus groups and informal discussions
- Ensure accessibility for all children, including those with disabilities, language barriers, or those living in remote areas
- Guarantee voluntary participation free from coercion or manipulation
2. Involvement – Engaging Children in Decision-Making
- Involve children in programme design, monitoring, and evaluation, allowing them to influence decisions that affect their lives
- Support and facilitate child-led initiatives such as youth forums, child parliaments, and peer support groups
- Train and mentor children to develop leadership and advocacy skills, enabling them to represent their peers in broader community and policy platforms
3. Listening – Valuing and Acting on Children’s Voices
- Create safe, child-friendly spaces where children feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment or reprisal
- Train staff, volunteers, and partner organizations in active listening and child-friendly communication techniques
- Establish clear mechanisms for children to provide feedback on services, with transparent follow-up actions demonstrating how their input is used
- Advocate within communities and institutions to recognize and respect children’s views in family, school, and governance settings
Challenges and Solutions
- Cultural Norms and Adultism: In many communities, adults dominate decision-making, and children’s voices are undervalued.
- Our response: Community sensitization campaigns to promote positive attitudes towards child participation and respect for children’s views.
- Capacity and Resources: Children and organizations may lack the skills or resources to participate meaningfully.
- Our response: Provide training and mentorship to build capacities and develop child participation tools adapted to local contexts.
- Safety and Confidentiality Concerns: Children may fear repercussions or stigma from speaking out.
- Our response: Implement strict confidentiality policies, provide psychosocial support, and ensure safe reporting channels.
- Tokenism: Participation is sometimes superficial, with children’s input ignored or used only for show.
- Our response: Advocate for genuine engagement where children’s opinions influence real decisions and outcomes, supported by accountability mechanisms.
Integration Across CKG Programs
Child participation is not a standalone activity but integrated into every aspect of CKG’s work:
- Child Protection: Children actively contribute to safety planning, identifying risks and solutions within their homes and communities.
- Education: Children participate in shaping school policies and activities that affect their learning environment.
- Health and Wellbeing: Children provide feedback on healthcare services, ensuring they meet their needs.
- Community Development: Children engage as partners in local development projects, fostering intergenerational dialogue and collaboration.
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Impact
