Background

Sexual abuse and sexual exploitation remain some of the most pervasive human rights violations affecting children worldwide. Most abuses are perpetrated by individuals known to the child — family members, neighbors, caregivers, or trusted community figures — often within the child’s own home or immediate social environment.

Sexual exploitation frequently involves coercion or manipulation where sex is exchanged for goods, favors, or protection. Children are often socialized, groomed, and psychologically manipulated, normalizing abusive dynamics and silencing victims.

While public attention often focuses on headline cases such as child prostitution and trafficking for sexual exploitation, the majority of abuse and exploitation incidents are hidden, everyday occurrences that go unreported and unaddressed.

Emerging Challenges

The widespread access to the internet, smartphones, and computers has introduced new dimensions of risk:

  • Sexting among minors — sharing explicit images and messages, often without full understanding of consequences
  • Production, possession, and distribution of child pornography facilitated by digital technologies
  • Perpetrators increasingly using online platforms to groom and exploit children anonymously
  • Difficulty for caregivers and authorities to monitor, detect, and intervene in these digital abuses

Program Focus

The CKG Sexual Abuse and Sexual Exploitation Awareness and Intervention Program aims to:

  • Increase awareness of sexual abuse and exploitation dynamics in homes and communities
  • Educate children, parents, caregivers, and community members on recognizing grooming and abuse signs
  • Promote children’s rights and bodily autonomy through empowerment and life-skills
