SaPro CEO Neftaly Malatjie Urges NPO Leaders to Master Budgeting at SayPro Capacity Building Training Programme

Southern Africa Youth Project Headquarters, Johannesburg — 24-26 June 2025

During the SayPro Capacity Building Training for NPOs Programme held from 24 to 26 June 2025, SayPro CEO Neftaly Malatjie delivered a compelling message to nonprofit organizations: “You need to learn how to budget.” The event, hosted at the Southern Africa Youth Project headquarters in Johannesburg, brought together over 150 leaders from nonprofit organizations across Southern Africa, focusing on financial sustainability, strategic management, and capacity building.

Neftaly Malatjie, a well-known advocate for youth empowerment and sustainable development, emphasized the importance of financial literacy and accountability in the nonprofit sector. “Many nonprofits collapse not because they lack passion or purpose,” Malatjie stated, “but because they lack proper budgeting and financial planning. Learning to manage your resources effectively is not optional—it’s essential for your mission.”

Building Sustainable Nonprofits Through Financial Skills

The SayPro Capacity Building Training Programme, now in its third year, is designed to empower nonprofit organizations with practical tools and knowledge to run more efficiently and make a greater impact in their communities. This year’s edition focused heavily on financial management, fundraising strategies, impact reporting, and governance.

Workshops over the three-day event included topics such as:

  • Budgeting and Financial Planning for NPOs
  • Writing Winning Funding Proposals
  • Monitoring and Evaluation Frameworks
  • Leadership and Strategic Visioning

Participants also engaged in hands-on activities to simulate real-world financial decision-making, supported by SayPro’s finance and governance experts.

A Wake-Up Call to the Sector

Malatjie’s statement served as a wake-up call to many small and emerging NPOs that struggle with financial sustainability. “You cannot serve your community if your organization is constantly in crisis mode,” he added. “Budgeting gives you the control and clarity to plan, grow, and scale your impact.”

The CEO also announced that SayPro will be expanding its technical support services to NPOs through monthly virtual training sessions, mentorship, and financial coaching, beginning in July 2025.

Participant Feedback

Attendees praised the training for its practical approach and relevance. Thandeka Mokoena, director of a youth-focused NPO in Mpumalanga, shared, “This training changed how I look at budgeting. I used to see it as just a formality for funding, but now I understand it’s a roadmap for how we operate every day.”

Looking Ahead

SayPro’s commitment to building the capacity of nonprofit leaders continues to grow. As the sector faces increased demands and limited resources, the message from this year’s training is clear: strong budgeting skills are the backbone of a sustainable and impactful nonprofit.
